YULENE OLAIZOLA’s thesis project and Opera Prima, the documentary INTIMIDADES DE SHAKESPEARE Y VÍCTOR HUGO (2008) was awarded in more than 30 festivals including BAFICI, IDFA, La Habana and San Sebastian. In 2011 she produced and directed her first fiction feature PARAÍSOS ARTIFICIALES, premiered in Rotterdam and awarded at Tribeca for the best cinematography. She premiered her third film FOGO at the Director´s Fortnight in Cannes in 2012, the film was the result of her work during the residency program of the Fogo Island Arts Corporation, in Newfoundland Canada.

RUBÉN IMAZ graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica with his Opera Prima FAMILIA TORTUGA, which received support from the Hubert Bals Fund and was premiered at San Sebastian in 2006. The film was awarded for best film at Santiago, Mexico City and Toulouse among other festivals. In 2010 he directed CEFALÓPODO, developed at the Cinefondation Residence of the Cannes Film Festival. The film received the award for best actor in Guadalajara and the press award at La Roche-Sur-Yon.

“Ascending a high mountain is a solitary act. Even though the general advance is usually performed in caravans, the long and tough walks are silent and each one journeys with his own thoughts. Deoxygenation provokes dizziness and vomit, sometimes hallucinations and could even cause dead. The ascent to the great volcano Popocatepetl is a hard battle between body and mind. Our characters had to face their fears, the ones that their own perception dictates; fears that take them to unknown places where their sanity can be jeopardised.

From the beginning of time we humans have taken over our own destiny, ruled our lives and have written our own history. It is us, who have conquered. It is us who have traced the road. And it is us who will have to face our own end. This is the paradigm that represents the conquest of America, through the metaphor of Diego de Ordaz’s expedition ascending towards the great volcano Popocatepetl. This is the epitaph of man; and it is the argument of this film.”

Xabier F. Coronado is a Spanish writer and researcher on issues related to literature, philosophy, archives and libraries. He publishes in La Jornada Semanal, a cultural supplement of the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, where he writes on literary and philosophical subjects. Xabier debuted as an actor with Epitaph.

Martín Román is a Spanish scriptwriter and director; he wrote La Bicicleta (feature movie) and Síndrome Laboral (tv-movie) and directed the short films Humildad, Primer domingo de mayo and 19/03. He moved to Mexico in 2012 and decided to study acting to improve his directing skills. Martín performed in several short movies and plays and participated in the long feature movies Amor de mis amores and Epitafio, his first co-starring character.

Carlos Triviño was born in the Island of Mallorca. In 2013, he moved to Mexico, where he worked as a mountain guide and alpinism instructor. Through this job, he was invited to get a role in the film Epitaph.
